Turn any assignment into an exam with one attempt per student, a time limit that keeps running, and results that stay hidden until you release them.
A class quiz works differently from homework. Students get one try, the clock matters, and you may not want anyone to see answers while classmates are still working. On Learnig, an exam is a normal assignment with Mode set to Exam. You keep the exercises you already have and change the rules.
| Homework | Exam | |
|---|---|---|
| Attempts | Students can retry until the due date. The latest attempt counts. | One attempt per student. |
| Time limit | Optional, under More settings | Set in Exam rules |
| Results | Shown after the student submits | Hidden until you release them, unless you choose to show them on submit |
Use Homework for practice. Use Exam for a unit test, a placement check or an end-of-week quiz.
Open the class and select Assign Work. Pick an exercise or a lesson from your library as you would for homework. Grammar, vocabulary, reading and dictation exercises can all be timed.
If you need a new test, build it first in Exercises. The Exercises guide shows how to create one with AI or from a template and check it before you assign it.
Under Mode, select Exam. The form shows the rule in one line: one attempt per learner. An Exam rules group then appears below the due date.
Set a due date with Set a deadline if the test has to be done by a certain day.
Exam rules appear once Mode is set to Exam.
Time limit offers 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, No limit, or Custom for any number of minutes. The clock starts when each student opens the exam, so a student who starts later still gets the full time.
Show results as soon as learners submit is off by default. Leave it off when you want to hold scores until the whole class has finished. Turn it on for a short quiz where instant scores help. You can also turn it on later by editing the assignment, which releases the scores.
For a dictation exam, Plays allowed sets how many times students can hear the audio: 1, 2 or 3 plays at normal speed. The loop, slower speeds and hints used in homework are switched off.
Under More settings you can change Points for the assignment. The default is 100.
Before starting, the student's assignment page shows Exam next to the exercise type and the Time limit, for example 15 Minutes.
The assignment page shows the exam label and the time limit before the student starts.
After Start, the exercise opens with Time left above the question. The clock runs from the moment the student starts, so a student who starts later still gets the full time.
Time left counts down above every question.
Every student sees the questions in a different order, and multiple-choice options are mixed as well. This happens automatically in grammar, vocabulary and reading exams, and there is no setting for it. Your review screen lists the questions in their original order.
When the clock reaches zero, Learnig submits the answers entered so far, as long as the page is still open. On the last question of a grammar exam the button reads Complete assignment. After submitting, the student cannot open the exam again.
While results are held back, the assignment page shows Waiting for results and the line "Your result will be available after your teacher releases it."
After submitting, the student sees that the result is waiting for the teacher.
Exam scores stay hidden from students until you release them. Objective questions are graded automatically when each student submits, so graded work waits as Ready to release, and the exam shows Release results in your Assignments queue.
An exam with graded work waiting shows Release results.
Release results opens the assignment's submissions, filtered to Ready to release.
Graded submissions wait under Ready to release.
To release the scores, open the assignment's menu, choose Edit, select Show results as soon as learners submit and then Save changes. The student moves from Ready to release to Graded. Publish feedback on its own does not release an exam score.
If you want to adjust a score or add a comment first, open Review on the student. The submission review guide covers that workflow. Exam scores stay out of the Gradebook until they are released, then sit next to the rest of the class's work.
Exams are part of the teacher workspace. See Pricing for what each teacher plan includes.
